How to Dress Vintage

Dressing vintage has grown in popularity in recent years, with the determination of gaining a sense of individuality and standing out from the crowd. Unlike modern fashion trends, vintage fashion allows you to dip into a vast array of styles, which allows you to experiment with clothing you feel most comfortable in and the era that is of most interest to you. Once you find a style that works for you, you may wish to combine different eras and get a little more experimental with your sense of fashion. In this guide, we’re going to look at how you can dress vintage:

1. Decide if you want to go authentic

One of the questions you may wish to ask yourself is whether you’re interested in pulling off an authentic vintage style or if you’d be more comfortable taking inspiration from it. Upon starting out, dressing head to toe in the original vintage may be a step too far until you adjust, so you may wish to experiment with a few of the key trends of the era before delving straight in. For example, if you are a fan of 80s culture but don’t wish to dress in authentic 80s style, you could create an outfit consisting of a retro t-shirt from 8ball.co.uk to pair with modern jeans. Whatever style you’re hoping to try, it’s always good to be open-minded and step out of your comfort zone as you may surprise yourself with what suits you.

2. Learn the basics

One of the most useful tips to take on board when it comes to vintage fashion is learning the basic style points of different eras. In doing so, you’ll find it much easier to find pieces that suit your body shape and pair well together. In addition, shopping will become much more straightforward as you can select individual pieces without concern about what to wear them with and how to style them.

3. Get ready to feel overdressed

Dressing vintage means you’re likely to feel overdressed at times – and this can be hard to get used to if you’re someone who doesn’t like to be the center of attention. At first, you may feel extremely awkward about standing out from the crowd when everyone around you is wearing sweaters and jeans, and of course, you may even receive compliments that may embarrass you further. Always recall why you wanted to dress vintage in the first place – most likely because it makes you feel great. Once you acknowledge that your style is a reflection of yourself, you’ll start to adjust. It may just take time.

4. Experiment with hair and make-up

To finish off your outfit, why not get a little experimental with hair and make-up? If you don’t want to appear too authentic and outdated, you could keep your make-up fairly minimal and modern when pairing with vintage clothes. In doing so, you’ll allow your outfit to take center stage. After all, it’s all about what works for you and makes you feel confident.
